FILM @ if ART: The Other Brother: A Documentary Film By Kristy Higby & Mark Flowers, Oct. 24, 2014, 7:30 pm.

THE OTHER BROTHER
A feature length documentary film

Director: Kristy Higby
Producer: Mark Flowers

Screening @ if ART Gallery:

Friday, October 24, 2014, 7:30 pm
Admission Free

Director Higby, producer Flowers and surviving "other brother" Tom Flowers will be present for Q&A after the screening.

Two brothers, estranged since 1948, share an exceptional bond. One is an art-world insider, and one lived alone in a world of art. This is a film about the ‘genetics’ of art and sibling estrangement. The subject is art but the story is universal.

The younger brother, Tom Flowers (now 86), received his undergraduate degree from Furman University and his MFA from the University of Iowa. The older brother, Jesse Flowers, joined the service right after dropping out of high school and became a recluse soon after serving as a medic during the end of WWII. He lived in a dirt-floor shack without plumbing. Both spent a lifetime making art.

Silver Screen Orchestra's first EP, For Nick, 2014

SILVER SCREEN ORCHESTRA
@
if ART Gallery

Vista Nights on Third Thursday
Oct. 16, 2014
5:00 – 8:00 pm; performance starts 5:30 pm.

if ART Gallery presents an evening of ear–eye coordination during VISTA NIGHTS on Third Thursday, October 16, 2014, 5:30 – 8:00 p.m., as Columbia's widely traveled SILVER SCREEN ORCHESTRA sets the tone and ambiance with live music against a backdrop of equally-live video projections. Enter the darkness and come out on the bright side, where exhibitions by Jeff Donovan and Michael Brodeur will be on view during the performance.
Fresh off a recording session in Montreal, Canada, for the band’s first EP, Silver Screen Orchestra will create instrumental music featuring electric guitar and violin against a video backdrop. The EP, For Nick, recorded with Howard Bilerman of Hotel2Tango, will be available for purchase. Silver Screen Orchestra uses public domain and personal stock footage as an inspiration for its music. Band members Nathan Stewart and Kayla Breitwieser, both of South Carolina post-rock band Pan, have been playing together since 2011. Their common interest in instrumental music, along with similar composing styles, resulted in early recordings. Incorporating a visual component became a staple of each composition and in some cases helped develop a song’s movement and purpose.
