The gallery already carried Lenzo's 1990s mixed-media altar pieces but now also represents Lenzo for the his ceramic work, for which the artist has developed a big reputation and large following in the past decade. Matt Overend (b. 1950) will present landscapes, still lifes, interior paintings and nudes. Overend is a native of Las Vegas who grew up in Atlanta and has lived in Smoaks, S.C., since 1981. He's been a mainstay of the South Carolina art scene for decades and is represented in the South Carolina State Art Collection, managed by the S.C. Arts Commission. Overend has been featured in four if ART Gallery exhibitions in the past five years. Overend in 1973 graduated as an aerospace engineer at Georgia Tech before studying art at Santa Barbara City College in California, the University of California at Santa Barbara and Yale University.

Just back from her second solo exhibition at the prominent O.K. Harris gallery in New York City, Columbia native Janet Orselli will be showing a selection of her New York show at if ART Gallery, January 13 - February 12, 2011. The opening reception is Thursday, January 13, 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.
In the exhibition’s found object constructions, Orselli, who lives in North Carolina, combines clogs, roller skates, shoes, shoe forms and a mouse trap on wheels with seemingly unrelated found objects such as a rusty toy car, an egg beater or a violin part. The exhibition also will include several of Orselli's crutches juxtaposed with seemingly unrelated objects, called “Impedimenta,” which were exhibited at O.K. Harris in 2007. OK Harris is the gallery of legendary New York art dealer Ivan Karp.

“These imaginative means of locomotion,” Orselli says, “are joined together by hand to form entirely new entities. Engaging and thought provoking, these found object constructions with their rich visual histories evoke the past while outrageously rolling toward the future.”

“My raw materials are leftovers from the past, or what some might call ‘worn out stuff’. These objects have a story to tell -- if we listen. All of them want to move some more. Each struggles to get ahead - some drag a weight behind them, others have a shell to break through, and still others - await takeoff. They are all trying awfully hard. Ultimately they attain arthood by releasing their object identity and joining others in a new (lively) purpose.”

Orselli (b. 1954) is an independent installation and performance artist. She has had solo shows at O.K. Harris gallery in New York City, the Turchin Center for Visual Arts in Boone, N.C., and at the Sumter Gallery of Art in Sumter, Charleston’s Gibbes Museum and the Burroughs & Chapin Museum in Myrtle Beach, all in South Carolina, and elsewhere. Her installations have been featured at Schopf Gallery on Lake, Chicago, IL, Holter Museum of Art, Helena, Montana, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, Indiana, and in three consecutive Accessibility Project events in Sumter, SC. Orselli’s found object constructions have been in national group exhibitions throughout the country. In 2001, she was selected to create a two-room installation for the South Carolina Triennial at the S.C. State Museum. That same year she was also awarded an artist scholarship by the S.C. Arts Commission to attend Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado. In 2005, she received the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowship.

OK Harris owner Ivan Karp, as the co-director of Leo Castelli Gallery in the 1960s, was instrumental in launching the careers of pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Tom Wesselman and John Chamberlain. Karp also was the first to exhibit in New York work by prominent contemporary artists Duane Hanson, and many others.

ASHLYNN BROWNING (b. 1977)

North Carolina abstract-expressionist painter Ashlynn Browning is a recent addition to if ART Gallery. Applying vigorous and robust layering and brush work, her paintings center on line and its ability to convey emotional information. "Experimenting with different line qualities and layers," Browning says, "is an integral part of my process, which involves a lot of drawing." Browning is a recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant and has exhibited at New York’s CUE Foundation and Lincoln Center. Other recent exhibitions include those at Hallway Projects in San Francisco and Flanders Gallery in Raleigh, N.C. Browning has received grants and residency fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center, the United Arts Council and the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. Her work was featured in the 2009 Southern edition of New American Paintings. Browning was born in Charlotte, N.C., and lives in Raleigh.

RUSSEL BILES JOINS if ART Gallery

Greenville, S.C., ceramic artists Russell Biles has joined if ART Gallery. Biles creates satirical cast-porcelain sculptures with a political, cultural and social bite. He is among South Carolina's nationally most prominent contemporary artists. Biles will be in the Columbia Museum of Art exhibition SC6: South Carolina Innovators In Clay, which opens in June. He has been represented by major league contemporary-ceramics galleries such as Garth Clark Gallery in New York and Massachusets' Ferrin Gallery. Biles consistently shows in museums, art centers and galleries across the country, and his work has been in several S.C. Triennial exhibitions. His sculptures are in the permanent collections of several museums, including the Museum of Art and Design in New York City. At if ART, Biles is showing small, totem-like porcelain sculptures from his So Fresh series. The sculptures are assembled from shards of Biles' Wee Art Club series, which consists of three-inch sculptures of different prominent figures. Included in the Wee Art Club series are Barak Obama, George W. Bush, the Frankenstein monster, Kim Il Sung, Andy Warhol, Michelangelo's David and others. The So Fresh sculptures combine parts of these and other figures in vertical structures five to 11 inches tall.

Washington, D.C., native Paul Reed (b. 1919) in 1965-1966 was with Kenneth Noland and Morris Louis among the six painters in The Washington Color Painters, the first nationally traveling Washington Color Field exhibition. Reed has experimented with media and techniques throughout his career. After an Abstract Expressionist period, Reed in 1959 began staining canvasses using water-based acrylics, then a recent invention. Over the next five decades, he also created metal sculpture and photographic collages. He made pastel drawings and shaped canvases, some of them directly nailed to the wall. He also produced gouache paintings done on plexiglass and transferred to paper. Reed’s work is in dozens of museums across the country, including the Phillips Collection, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, all in D.C., the Detroit Institute of Art, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Dallas Museum of Art, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the San Francisco Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. In South Carolina, his work is in the Greenville County Museum of Art and the Columbia Museum of Art.

FROM THE CATALOGUE: Jeff Donovan has packed a good 20 years of art production into the three decades-plus that have passed since completing what he considers his first successful painting, Reclining Figure, c. 1977-78. That’s not to say that he didn’t do anything at all for a decade, but between the mid-1980s and ’90s, he wasn’t producing much art. “I wouldn’t even say that I drew in my sketchbook,” Donovan says. “I just doodled a little.” His 1984 painting The Yawn was, in hindsight, a prelude to a decade of hibernation as an artist. He still managed the first version of Overhead, a man looking toward the sky, but went dormant after that. Still, one of the hibernation-era doodles in 1994 became the original, oil pastel version of Two Drunk Popes, the model for Donovan’s popular, hand-colored 1999 woodcut of which he had to print number 31/30 to have one himself. Another doodle became the 1994 painting The Friar With The Plywood Collar Goes Boating, which subsequently, in 2005, became one of Donovan’s first ceramic sculptures. Atits location at 1223 Lincoln Street, Columbia, S.C., and at Columbia’s Gallery80808/Vista Studios, 808 Lady Street, if ART Gallery will celebrate its fifthanniversary with if ART Gallery 5 Years,an exhibition of gallery artists that also will introduce two new additions tothe gallery: Greenville, S.C., painter Michael Brodeur and the ceramicsculptures of Columbia artist Peter Lenzo.

Theexhibition will run from October 28 – November 8, 2011. The Fifth Anniversary Reception will takeplace Friday, October 28, 5 – 9 pm, at both the gallery and Gallery 80808. Exhibitionhours will be weekdays, 11 pm – 7 pm.; Saturday, 11 am – 5 pm; and Sunday, 1 –5 pm.

ifART Gallery opened its door on November 10, 2006. Prior to that, gallery ownerWim Roefs organized exhibitions at his home in Columbia’s Old Shandonneighborhood, at Lewis & Clark’s old location on the corner of Lincoln andLady Streets and at Gallery 80808/Vista Studios. Those early exhibitionsincluded artists such as Leo Twiggs, Jeff Donovan, Carl Blair, Laura Spong,Herb Parker, Mary Gilkerson, Phil Garrett, Mike Williams, Aaron Baldwin, EdwardRice, Anna Redwine, Tonya Gregg, Tom Stanley, Klaus Hartmann and Peter Lenzo. Earlybreak-through exhibition were AaronBaldwin & Mike Williams: UpFrom The Mud in October 2005, Columbia artist Laura Spong’s 80^thbirthday exhibition in February 2006 and Leo Twiggs’ Toward Another Retrospective in March, 2006.

“Theseexhibitions did remarkably well, both in terms of critical acclaim and sales,”Roefs said. “They were a good way to start an art business in that there wasnot the typical high overhead of a gallery. The disadvantage was that it washard to do much for artists in between exhibitions. When the gallery’s currentlocation became available in the summer of 2006, I decided to open thegallery.”

Afterits opening, the gallery, which has some 40 artists on its roster, continued tomount exhibitions at Gallery 80808. There and at its own location, if ART hasorganized 53 exhibitions, 34 of them solo exhibitions. The gallery has shownthe work of more than 80 artists, including more than 35 artists from TheNetherlands, Germany, Argentina, Belgium, England, France and Cuba.

Throughsuch exhibitions as The Fame Factorin September 2007, The Inventory inFebruary 2008, Salon I, II and III in December 2008 – February 2009 andGoing Dutch in December 2010, if ART hasshown work by many international artists, including world famous artists suchas Joan Mitchell, Karel Appel, Corneille, Bram van Velde, Lynn Chadwick andWifredo Lam. if ART has shown nationally famous artists such as John Hultberg,Ibram Lassaw, Benny Andrews, Richard Hunt and Sam Middleton and represents originalWashington Color School painter Paul Reed as well as Philip Morsberger, theformer head of the art department at England’s Oxford University.

Thegallery is an active participant in the informal artists’ exchange betweenColumbia and its German sister city Kaiserlautern, an exchange that iscelebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Among gallery artists who havetraveled to Germany are Mike Williams, Stephen Chesley, Janet Orselli, DorothyNetherland, Laura Spong, Tonya Gregg, Brown Thornton, David Yaghjian and JeffDonovan. The latter two currently are in Kaiserslautern for a 10-day symposiumand exhibition. if ART represents five artists from Kaiserslautern: KlausHartmann, Reiner Mahrlein, Silvia Rudolf, Ralph Gelbert and Roland Albert. Italso represents Dutch artists Kees Salentijn and Sjaak Korsten.

“I’dlike to think the gallery has raised the bar in Columbia,” Roefs says. “I hopethat the quality of the exhibitions in terms of the art presented and they waythey were designed have added to the local art scene. Also, it’s unusual tohave a gallery here with so many artists from abroad. It’s even more unusualfor a gallery in South Carolina to show the work by artists who make thehistory books about 20^th century art such as Mitchell, Appel, VanVelde, Chadwick and Lam.”

ifART also has published almost 20 exhibition catalogues and almost 50 essaysabout gallery artists, all but a few written by Roefs. “Those catalogues areespecially unique,” Roefs says. “if ART since 2006 by a long shot has publishedmore exhibition catalogues than all other art galleries, art centers andmuseums in Columbia combined. South Carolina galleries seldom publishcatalogues, and museums do so sporadically. I am not always sure that peoplerealize how unusual it is for if ART to have produced these catalogues. But Ithink they are important. They help educate the public, they create a record ofartists’ achievements, they obviously are a great way to promote those artistsand they are among the most important resume lines an artist can have. A lot ofif ART’s catalogues were modest affairs – small catalogues produced on colorcopiers – but their very existence is unique within the local context. Thecatalogues for exhibitions by David Yaghjian, Jeff Donovan, Edward Rice and,twice, Laura Spong, are, I think, of museum quality.”

Mary Gilkerson (b. 1958) has a prominent presence on the art scene of the South Carolina Midlands as an artist, critic and curator. She teaches art at Columbia College in her hometown of Columbia, S.C. In the past two decades, she has kept up a steady exhibition pace throughout the state and beyond. She has received a grant from the S.C. Arts Commission and twice won top honors in the Florence (S.C.) Museum of Art annual juried art exhibition. Gilkerson holds BFA, MA and MFA degrees from the University of South Carolina. She's an art reviewer for Columbia's weekly Free Times.

if ART Gallery artist Laura Spong is part of the Lifetime cable network's new series Drop Dead Diva, but she's feeling fine, thank you very much. Spong's paintings are on view prominently on the show, for instance in the law offices where the series' main character works. The show's producers have rented several paintings by Spong for the series' sets.

To see five paintings by Spong in 30 seconds, click here, which will take you to the show's second episode, called The F-Word. Five of Spong's paintings appear early, between 1' 50" and 2' 20" into the show. At exactly eight minutes into the program, another one of Spong's paintings shows up. At 25' 43'' and at 30 minutes, there are other direct views of three Spong paintings. In total, at least eight Spong paintings grace the walls of the show's law office, where much of the action takes place. The paintings appear in full view throughout each episode of the program.

Three lithos from Mitchell's 1991 Arbres series fetched $6,875 as a set, unframed. if ART Gallery sells two of those lithos for $1,700 each, framed. Kleinformat/Small Format: The Columbia - Kaiserslautern Exchange is currently showing at if ART Gallery, 1223 Lincoln Street. This exhibition runs from Friday, October 26 until Tuesday, November 13, 2007 and included an opening reception on Friday, October 26 from 5 - 10 PM. Additional hours are: Weekdays from 11 AM until 7 PM and Saturdays from 11 AM until 5 PM. The exhibit features work by five South Carolinians (Mary Gilkerson, H. Brown Thornton, Stephen Chesley, Mike Williams, and Tonya Gregg) and five Germans from Columbia's sister city, Kaiserslautern (Silvia Rudolf, Roland Albert, Reiner Mahrlein, Ralph Gelbert and Klaus Hartmann).
